Although it is not extensively discussed, the endocannabinoid system is indispensable for our body. Simply said, it ensures there is a good communication between our body cells, and thereby maintains the body balance necessary for proper body function (so-called homeostasis). Therefore, it affects various processes throughout the entire body - from blood pressure to appetite, memory, immune system.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
Simply said, the task of the endocannabinoid system is to monitor the condition and properly balanced function of individual organ systems. Specifically, it ensures that the cells in the body react correctly to various situations. Receptors involved in the endocannabinoid system can be found throughout the body - literally from head to toe.
The correct function of the endocannabinoid system affects, among other things:
- sleep quality, positive mood, it relieves stress,
- appetite, metabolism, and fat storage
- good bone growth,
- problem-free motor skills and muscle coordination,
- easier learning and better memory,
- proper functioning of the liver and digestive system,
- reproductive health.
What does the endocannabinoid system consist of?
The endocannabinoid system can be divided into 3 parts:
1. Endocannabinoid receptors
You can find this part of the system in your whole body - almost no cell can do without it. The receptors capture individual endocannabinoids and receive signals. The best known and most widespread are 2 types of receptors:
- CB1 are mainly part of the central nervous system, i.e. the brain and spinal cord. They mainly affect digestion, appetite, or reproductive health.
- CB2 are found in internal organs, immune cells and in the peripheral nervous system. These receptors influence immunity, skin, or bones.
However, other types of receptors in our body are also involved in the system. This area is still the subject of intense research and new information is added every day.
2. Endocannabinoids
Endocannabinoid receptors transmit messages and information among themselves about what needs to be done in the body. Endocannabinoids are produced by our body. For this, our body uses fats that it gets from the food we eat. The most famous are these 2 substances:

- 2-arachidonoylglycerol – contributes, among other things, to the proper functioning of the liver, lungs, or the brain. Scientists consider it to be the key to proper brain function even at old age, and it is being studied in connection with neurodegenerative diseases.
3. Endocannabinoid enzymes
If needed, enzymes produce endocannabinoids from stored substances in the blood. Once the endocannabinoids have done their job, the body gets rid of them using other enzymes. They simply ensure that endocannabinoids are available and at the same time do not build up in the body.
